Medicinal Plants that Provide Relief for Hemorrhoids

Posted on December 11, 2025

When it comes to finding relief for hemorrhoids, over-the-counter products are often the first line of defense. But what are the ingredients in these products? And which medicinal plants can actually help relieve the discomfort of mild hemorrhoids? Here’s what you need to know.

Plant-Based Relief for Hemorrhoids

Many over-the-counter hemorrhoid products contain plant-based ingredients such as witch hazel and horse chestnut. While they seem to provide temporary relief for hemorrhoids symptoms such as itching and swelling, their long-term effects were unclear. Now, this study in the journal Cureus is filling that void of knowledge. And, after conducting a thorough review of existing literature, the authors reached this conclusion: “Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) contains astringent tannins that constrict blood vessels, reduce local inflammation, and alleviate minor bleeding and irritation. Similarly, horse chestnut seed extract is rich in aescin, a saponin with venotonic and anti-inflammatory properties that promote vascular tone and diminish venous congestion, leading to reduced swelling and discomfort.”  In other words, these plant extracts can help reduce the pain and swelling associated with hemorrhoids, in some cases even addressing minor bleeding.

However, the study authors further note that topical treatments are most effective for external hemorrhoids, where the main symptoms are pain, swelling and itching. When people suffer from internal hemorrhoids, however, plant-based products may not provide sufficient relief.

Addressing Internal Hemorrhoids

If you need relief for bleeding hemorrhoids that are internal and have reached a Grade 2 to 3 degree of prolapse, topical products are unlikely to help. Instead, you should explore Hemorrhoid Artery Embolization [HAE], a minimally invasive procedure that relieves symptoms without surgery and with fewer potential side effects. You can avoid general anesthesia and overnight hospital stays while enjoying effective relief and a brief recovery period.
