And, after conducting a thorough review of existing literature, the authors reached this conclusion: “Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) contains astringent tannins that constrict blood vessels, reduce local inflammation, and alleviate minor bleeding and irritation. Similarly, horse chestnut seed extract is rich in aescin, a saponin with venotonic and anti-inflammatory properties that promote vascular tone and diminish venous congestion, leading to reduced swelling and discomfort.”  In other words, these plant extracts can help reduce the pain and swelling associated with hemorrhoids, in some cases even addressing minor bleeding.

However, the study authors further note that topical treatments are most effective for external hemorrhoids, where the main symptoms are pain, swelling and itching. When people suffer from internal hemorrhoids, however, plant-based products may not provide sufficient relief.
