Minimally Invasive Radiofrequency Perforator Ablation (RPA) Procedure

Cutting off abnormal blood flow through radiofrequency energy treatment.

There are approximately 150,000 new cases of venous insufficiency each year in the United States. Of those cases, the most frequent cause is incompetent vein valves in the legs.

Perforator veins connect the small and large vein systems in your body. That’s why they’re often most affected when vein valves begin to work inefficiently.

Our vein experts use state-of-the-art outpatient procedures, like radiofrequency perforator ablation, to seal the perforator vein, reduce symptoms of vein disease and improve functionality.

What is Perforator Ablation?

Radiofrequency perforator vein ablation is a minimally invasive outpatient vascular treatment for venous reflux or pre-ulcer veins. Also, a sub-type of Radiofrequency Ablation (RBA) treatment. As its name suggests, this procedure affects the perforator veins, which are short connections between your deep and superficial veins.

Perforator veins can suffer valve damage and retrograde blood flow (venous reflux), just like other veins.

Most patients with vein disease who experience skin changes that may result in leg ulcers have reflux in perforator veins near their ulcers and superficial or deep veins.

During treatment, radiofrequency energy closes the affected perforator vein. It cuts off abnormal blood flow between the deep and superficial veins and is performed only under local anesthesia.

Patients generally experience little or no pain or downtime and often feel relief from their symptoms immediately following treatment; results are long-lasting.

Before recommending radiofrequency perforator ablation, your doctor will require a medical exam and diagnostic ultrasound evaluation. This helps determine whether the procedure is appropriate for your care.

Perforator ablation is ideal for those diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency due to poorly functioning perforator veins.

With this condition, poor circulation leads to blood flow pooling in the legs, which can increase pressure in the leg veins and lead to symptoms such as:
