Vascular Treatments with Varicocele Embolization in Houston & Dallas

Varicocele is a common vein-related condition that affects men. About 15% of men will develop a varicocele in their lifetime, most often beginning during puberty.

Although varicoceles often develop during the teenage years, many men do not discover them until later in life when they begin experiencing discomfort, notice changes in the scrotum, or encounter fertility concerns.

Many varicoceles do not cause symptoms and may not require treatment. However, when a varicocele causes persistent pain, testicular changes, or fertility problems, evaluating the underlying vascular issue can help determine the appropriate next step.

If you've recently been diagnosed with a varicocele, are experiencing symptoms consistent with one, or have fertility concerns that may be connected to this vascular condition, Texas Endovascular can help.

Using varicocele embolization, our interventional radiologists can treat the abnormal vein from within the blood vessel, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins without traditional open surgery.

You don't have to continue living with varicocele-related discomfort or unanswered questions about fertility issues. Our specialists provide advanced evaluation and minimally invasive varicocele treatment options at convenient locations throughout the Houston and Dallas areas

What is a Varicocele?

A varicocele is an enlargement of veins within the scrotum. It develops when blood does not circulate normally through these veins, causing them to become swollen or enlarged.

Normally, valves within veins help keep blood moving in the proper direction. When these valves do not function correctly or normal blood flow becomes restricted, blood can collect within the veins and increase pressure.

Varicoceles occur more commonly on the left side of the scrotum because of differences in the anatomy and drainage of the veins on that side.

For many men, a varicocele causes no noticeable problems. Others may develop discomfort or complications that become more apparent over time.

Symptoms of a Varicocele

Varicoceles develop during puberty but can grow over time, causing symptoms to become more noticeable.

Although most men do not experience symptoms, those who do may notice pain that:

Some men may also notice swelling or an enlarged vein within the scrotum.

Varicocele can prevent a testicle from fully developing or cause it to shrink, known as testicular atrophy. The affected testicle may also become noticeably different in size from the other.

Another potential complication is reduced sperm production or decreased sperm quality. Increased pressure and temperature surrounding the testicle may interfere with normal sperm development, making varicocele an important condition to consider when evaluating certain cases of male infertility.

Varicocele and Male Infertility

A varicocele does not automatically mean that a man will experience infertility. Many men with varicoceles are able to have children without treatment.

However, varicoceles are commonly identified during evaluations for male infertility. The abnormal pooling of blood associated with a varicocele may increase the temperature surrounding the testicle and affect the environment necessary for normal sperm production.

Potential fertility-related effects can include:

If you are experiencing fertility concerns and have been diagnosed with a varicocele, an evaluation can help determine whether the vascular condition may be contributing to the problem.

How to Diagnose a Varicocele

Your doctor may be able to diagnose a varicocele through a physical examination. During the exam, your physician may check the scrotum for enlarged or abnormal veins while you are standing or lying down.

A scrotal ultrasound may also be recommended. Ultrasound provides detailed images of the structures within the scrotum and can help your physician evaluate the affected veins and rule out other potential causes of your symptoms.

Accurate diagnosis is particularly important when you are experiencing persistent pain.

Am I a Candidate for Varicocele Embolization Treatment?

Not every varicocele requires treatment. If you are not experiencing symptoms or complications, your physician may recommend monitoring the condition rather than immediately treating it.

Treatment may be considered when a varicocele is associated with:

If you're experiencing these problems, talk to a vascular specialist about your varicocele treatment options.

Open surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and varicocele embolization are among the treatment approaches available. The right option depends on your symptoms, health history, imaging findings, and individual needs.

Understanding Varicocele Embolization Treatment in Houston & Dallas

Varicocele embolization is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure that blocks abnormal blood flow through the enlarged vein responsible for the varicocele.

Instead of surgically removing or tying off the affected vein through a larger incision, an interventional radiologist accesses the vascular system through a small puncture.

During the procedure, a catheter is carefully guided through the blood vessels to the affected vein. Once the abnormal vein has been identified, coils or other embolic materials are placed to block blood flow through it.

Blood then redirects through healthier veins, reducing pressure within the varicocele.

Because the treatment is performed from inside the blood vessel, varicocele embolization avoids many of the elements associated with traditional open surgery.

What to Expect During Varicocele Embolization

Understanding what happens during treatment can make preparing for your procedure easier.

Step 1: Vascular Access

A small access point is created, typically in the groin or neck, allowing the interventional radiologist to enter the vascular system without a large surgical incision.

Step 2: Image-Guided Catheter Placement

A thin catheter is carefully guided through the blood vessels toward the vein responsible for the varicocele. Advanced imaging helps the physician accurately navigate to the treatment area.

Step 3: Closing the Abnormal Vein

Small coils or other embolic materials are delivered through the catheter to block the affected vein.

Step 4: Redirecting Blood Flow

Once the abnormal vein is closed, blood is naturally redirected through healthier veins.

Step 5: Same-Day Recovery

After a brief recovery period, most patients can return home the same day. Many can resume normal activities within approximately 24 hours, depending on their physician's recommendations.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Varicocele Embolization

For appropriate candidates, varicocele embolization offers an alternative to traditional surgical treatment.

Potential benefits include:

The success rates of standard surgical treatment and varicocele embolization are comparable, while embolization generally offers a shorter recovery period.

Your physician will review your individual condition and help determine whether embolization is the appropriate approach for your varicocele.

Recovery After Varicocele Embolization

One of the primary advantages of minimally invasive varicocele treatment is the relatively short recovery.

Most patients return home the same day as their procedure. Your care team will provide specific instructions regarding activity, the treatment access site, and when you can return to exercise, work, and other normal activities.

Many patients can resume routine activities within approximately 24 hours, although recovery can vary from person to person.

Following your physician's post-procedure instructions is important for a smooth recovery and optimal treatment outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions About Varicocele Embolization

Does Every Varicocele Need Treatment?

No. Many varicoceles do not cause symptoms or complications and may not require treatment. Treatment is generally considered when a varicocele causes persistent discomfort, testicular changes, or fertility problems.

Can a Varicocele Cause Infertility?

A varicocele does not always cause infertility, but it can affect sperm production and sperm quality in some men. If you're experiencing fertility problems, your physician can evaluate whether a varicocele may be contributing to them.

Is Varicocele Embolization Surgery?

Varicocele embolization is a minimally invasive procedure rather than traditional open surgery. An interventional radiologist uses image guidance and a small catheter to access and close the abnormal vein.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From Varicocele Embolization?

Most patients return home the same day, and many can resume normal activities within approximately 24 hours. Your individual recovery timeline will depend on your procedure and your physician's recommendations.

What Happens to Blood Flow After the Varicocele Vein Is Closed?

After the abnormal vein is blocked, blood is redirected through other healthy veins. This reduces abnormal blood pooling and pressure within the varicocele.

Who Performs Varicocele Embolization?

Varicocele embolization is performed by an interventional radiologist trained in minimally invasive, image-guided vascular procedures.

How Do I Know If Varicocele Embolization Is Right for Me?

The first step is an evaluation of your symptoms, medical history, and varicocele. Your physician may also use ultrasound imaging to better understand the affected veins before determining whether embolization is an appropriate treatment option.
