Finding out you have uterine fibroids can leave you with a lot of questions, especially if symptoms have been affecting your daily life.

Fibroids are noncancerous growths that can develop in and around the uterus. Some cause no symptoms at all. Others can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, pain, bloating, or frequent urination. If your fibroids are causing symptoms, there are several ways they can be treated. The right approach depends on factors such as the size and location of the fibroids, your symptoms, your medical history, and what matters most to you when considering treatment.

What is uterine fibroid embolization?

Uterine fibroid embolization, or UFE, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids.

During UFE, an interventional radiologist uses image guidance to place a small catheter into the blood vessels supplying the fibroids. Tiny particles are then delivered through the catheter to reduce blood flow to the fibroids. Over time, the fibroids shrink. Because UFE does not require removal of the uterus, it is an alternative to hysterectomy for some patients. It is not the right treatment for everyone, which is why an individual evaluation is important.
