Why Do Leg Veins Bulge After Running?

If you’ve noticed that your leg veins bulge after running, you may be worried about a developing health problem. Sometimes, leg veins pop out after a run due to benign factors like increased blood flow to your legs. At other times, this bulging could be the result of developing vein disease. Why Do Leg Veins Bulge After Running?

As you run, the muscles in your legs contract in rhythm with your stride, helping move blood back up to your heart. But, at the same time, your heart is working harder while you run, meaning more blood is flowing through your veins. This combination means there’s more blood in your veins, and more pressure on those veins and, sometimes, that makes them bulge temporarily, especially after a very long or fast run. In most cases, these leg veins that bulge after running are not a sign of vein disease. Running uphill or on hard surfaces like concrete can also maximize this effect.

Who is Most at Risk

While any runner can experience bulging leg veins after training, you’re more likely to notice this effect if:

  • You have a family history of prominent or varicose veins
  • You are an older adult (skin tends to thin and lose elasticity as you age, meaning veins can appear more prominent)
  • You are pregnant or post-menopausal (hormonal fluctuations during these periods can impact the strength of your vein walls.

These factors also increase your risk for vein disease. As such, if you’ve already noticed that your veins bulge after running, it’s worth taking measures to protect yourself when you train. Consider wearing compressions sock when you run, and for a while afterward, to help support your circulation. Don’t sit down immediately after a run, instead engaging in an active cooldown with a walk or even a gentle bike ride. Then, once you’re ready to sit down, elevate your legs above the level of your heart to help drain your legs of any excess blood that’s pooled during exercise.

When to See a Doctor for Leg Veins That Bulge After Running

In most cases, veins that pop after vigorous exercise are not a cause for concern. But, for some patients, this could be a sign of vein disease. So see a vascular specialist if you notice other signs of vein disease, including:

  • Swollen, achy or heavy legs
  • Red, dry, shiny or irritated skin
  • Patches of skin that appear darker in color
  • Slowed growth of leg hair
