What is pelvic pain?
Pelvic pain is any pain or discomfort felt in the lower abdomen or pelvic region. It can range in severity from mild to severe.
Pelvic pain can come in many forms, from a dull, annoying ache to an intensely sharp, jab-like pain, and is often associated with uterine fibroids. It has also been described as a feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen.
While fibroids and pelvic pain are most often felt or intensified during a woman’s menstrual cycle, the pain can occur at any time. In fact, some women with fibroids have pain every day.
How do fibroids cause pelvic pain?
As fibroids grow, they can add pressure to the uterus and neighboring organs and bones, including the pelvis.
If you have numerous fibroids or larger ones, they expand the overall size of the uterus as they grow and multiply. The larger uterus size also increases pelvic pressure from fibroids, leading to pain and discomfort, especially during your menstrual cycle when your uterus is contracting.
All types of fibroids can cause pelvic pain, but the most common type is usually subserosal, as they are found outside the uterus and protrude outward.
How to treat fibroids and end pelvic pain
For many women, the harsh reality of living with fibroids is also living with pelvic pain and discomfort.
Over-the-counter pain relievers and heat therapy can help ease the pain, but they do not take care of the main source of the issue for good. A medical team must diagnose the underlying causes to effectively treat fibroids and pelvic pain.
In the case of uterine fibroids and pelvic pain, the best treatment for most women is complete uterine fibroid removal. Removing fibroids can be done in several ways, including uterine fibroid embolization (UFE).
During your consultation, we’ll discuss the best way to remove fibroids based on personalized factors, including:
- Fibroid location on or in the uterus
- Fibroid size
- The number of fibroids affecting your uterus
- Other fibroid symptoms
- Your unique health history
