Women have a higher risk for varicose veins than men—up to 55% of women develop them, according to this study, compared to 30% of men. One common risk factor for these veins is pregnancy. But did you know that taking birth control pills could also increase your varicose vein risk? Here’s what the science has to say.
While the side effect is rare, some women who take birth control pills do develop varicose veins. This side effect seems to result from hormonal fluctuations, related to the medication, that weaken your vein valves and walls; increase pressure in your veins; and interfere with blood flow. Hormonal contraceptives can also contribute to fluid retention, putting additional stress on your veins. However, scientists haven’t yet been able to directly link birth control pills and varicose veins, because so many other factors impact your risk for developing this form of vein disease.
As this study noted, it’s hard to determine if birth control pills cause varicose veins because of the other lifestyle risk factors that contribute to vein disease. In addition to pregnancy, a risk factor already mentioned, women are more likely to experience challenges to their vein health if they are sedentary; have a family history of vein disease; or spend too much time sitting or standing. Given all these factors, following a vein health diet; getting regular exercise; and moving more all throughout your day may be just as important for disease prevention as the form of birth control you choose to take. However, if you are at an elevated risk for vein disease, you may wish to explore non-hormonal forms of contraception with your healthcare provider.
For many people, prevention alone will not be enough to stop varicose veins from forming.
