If you want to get rid of bulging, painful varicose veins, you have options. But if you want fast relief with fewer complications, you’ll want to select the best nonsurgical treatment for varicose veins. Here are your options.
In the past, surgery was a standard varicose vein treatment. Yet, according to the CLASS (Comparison of Laser, Surgery and Foam Sclerotherapy) study, there are at least two non-surgical treatment options—sclerotherapy and ablation—that deliver superior results with fewer complications. And guess what? We offer both procedures at our vein care clinics in Houston, Katy, Clear Lake, Sugar Land, the Woodlands and Dallas! Ready to explore your treatment options in depth? Keep reading for all the important details.
Our vein specialists offer two kinds of sclerotherapy: cosmetic and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy.
Foam sclerotherapy is a procedure that uses ultrasound guidance to find and gain access to torturous varicose veins located under the skin. Once the vein is accessed, we inject a foam solution into the abnormal vein or veins. The sclerosing agent causes the abnormal vessel to collapse allowing blood to be redirected into your body’s healthier veins. This procedure is typically performed on patients with residual varicose veins following radiofrequency ablation. It is also often times used to treat a portion of the great saphenous vein that is located below the knee after radiofrequency ablation. (More on that procedure below.)
Cosmetic sclerotherapy is a vascular procedure intended to treat spider veins located near the skin’s surface. During this procedure, we inject a solution into your problematic spider veins causing them to collapse, shrink and, eventually disappear. It may take several sessions of cosmetic sclerotherapy to achieve desired results.
Radiofrequency vein ablation or RFA is a minimally invasive procedure during which we insert a catheter into saphenous veins (which are peripheral/superficial veins in your lower extremities) and perforating veins (these connect your deep and superficial vein systems). Once in place, we supply the catheter with heat energy that causes the vein to close permanently. After closure, the body will dissolve the treated vessel over time. This redirects blood flow to healthy veins in your lower extremities. RFA is performed in the office under local anesthetic. This non-surgical treatment does not require down-time and causes virtually no discomfort during or after the procedure.
While sclerotherapy delivers fantastic results for individuals with surface-level spider veins, the CLASS study reveals that a combination of RFA and foam sclerotherapy provides a better option for people with vein concerns, as these procedures will address the full scope of the venous concerns.
Of course, these are not the only non-surgical varicose vein treatments provided by our Texas-based interventional radiologists. In addition to sclerotherapy and RFA, we can also resolve varicose veins with Ambulatory Phlebectomy. The best treatment option for your condition will be determined after you come into the office for a complete consultation, that will likely include an ultrasound vein evaluation to determine the extent of your disease progression.
